Forum at Domshof: What Do Students Think?

In this interview, five law students tell us what they think about moving to the city center

Campus Life

The Faculty of Law will move to the former Nord/LB building at Domshof in October. This will create an additional location for the University of Bremen in the city center. What do students think of the move? What are they looking forward to, what concerns do they have? up2date. interviewed five of them.

Aylin Can, 4th semester student

“When I learned about the relocation plans, I was initially skeptical whether the move would take place at all. Now that it is really happening, I am looking forward to the move. The building is very nice and everything is freshly renovated. I think the new location will improve the faculty’s reputation. I also see the proximity to law firms in the city as an opportunity for career entry. I think I will be spending less time on campus in Horn. Although that would be a pity, it would also be a good sign. Because that means that everything we need for our degree is at the new location.”

Nils Kaufholz, 4th semester student

“I am particularly looking forward to the new dining hall, and not having to walk so far to get food! The new building is very modern and beautiful, which is also a plus. Having a location like this with its own dining hall and library centrally on the main campus would be ideal for me, but that is unfortunately not feasible. I would say that our degree program has little points of contact with other subjects anyway, at least for those who are doing a single-subject major. Therefore, no longer being on the central campus is okay in my view. My travel time to the university will also be shorter, which is an added bonus.

I find it difficult that the decision regarding our lecture hall has not been finalized yet. In addition, I am a student representative and some of my questions about the move are still unresolved. This makes us a little nervous, because we do not yet know whether all challenges will be resolved on time. Apart from these open questions, I am optimistic. I think the new location will provide more cooperation with the courts and more opportunities for internships.”

Emilia De Rosa, 6th semester student

“Since I was active as a student representative for a long time, I learned about the relocation plans very early on. I was part of a working group that combined the university’s various status groups and we were able to express our wishes for planning the new location. Because of this, I already had the opportunity to see the building from the inside. I am very much looking forward to having a dining hall nearby, a café directly in the building, the library on site, and lounge areas – for me, everything about the move is actually positive. Another advantage for us students is certainly the proximity to the courts. It will make organizing excursions easier, for example.

What worries me a bit is the relocation of the library. During the renovation in GW1 building, there was a long transitional phase in which we had only limited access to the books in the legal library (Juridicum). I’m a bit concerned that the relocation might again lead to restrictions.”

“At the new location, we will have more space, our own dining hall, and library – that’s great, because our former building was a bit further away. For me personally, I will now have a shorter commute to classes. I find it a pity that we will be somewhat cut off. The feeling of being part of a large university may change as a result. For students doing a minor in law with another subject as their major, it will be a challenge to study at two locations instead of one. The university will be more present in the city as a result of the move, which will certainly open up new opportunities.”

Vincent Wagener, 6th semester student

“Due to my activity in the student council, I learned about the move very early on. The new location is very nice and I find the location in the city center practical. The Law Examination Authority (Justizprüfungsamt) is in the immediate vicinity, as is the district court with its own library. I am also very much looking forward to having our own dining hall. At the same time, I think the winter semester may start a bit bumpy, as we will be right in the middle of the transition from the old campus to the city center.

I find it a pity that the student services on campus will be more difficult to access for us. University sports, campus cinema, psychological counseling – none of this will be as easy to take part in as before. Of course, there will also be less networking with students from other faculties. At the same time, however, I am curious to see what effects constant contact while studying, working, and eating in the same building will have on students and teachers.”
