20 Years of Bremen Kids’ University: Experience Science Firsthand!
Two students tell about their experiences during Bremen Kids’ University and their first contact with labs, walking with freeze pops, and a lecture hall
The Kids’ University at the University of Bremen has been inspiring scientists of tomorrow for two decades, and invites children between the ages of 8 and 12 to attend exciting lectures and workshops once again this spring.
From April 1 to 10, 2025, young participants can look forward to a fascinating journey into the world of science. Two “Kids’ University Alumni,” who have already embarked on this journey, share their experiences with the Kids’ University and describe the lasting impact the program left on them.
Moritz: From Kids’ University Attendee to Business Psychology Student
Moritz Ferdinand Rocker attended the Kids’ University in 2007 at the age of eight, and still has fond memories of a lecture on computers. He was particularly fascinated by an experiment where a child was asked to eat a freeze pop and walk through the lecture hall at the same time – a vivid demonstration of how processors may or may not be handling different tasks simultaneously. “That impressed me a lot, because I suddenly understood the concept correctly,” says Moritz. Even though he did not go on to study computer science, his early contact with scientific topics shaped him. Today, he is studying business psychology, still feels connected to the University of Bremen, and is convinced that the Kids’ University makes a valuable contribution towards promoting science at an early age.

Pia: Excited About Experiments and Lab Work
Pia Mossig attended the Kids’ University in 2015 at the age of ten, and the lab work left a lasting impression. “It was really exciting that we were able to do experiments ourselves. I still remember one where things exploded,” she says with a smile. She vividly remembers making shower gel in a chemistry seminar. “We were allowed to mix the ingredients ourselves, and had a real product to take home in the end.” Although she was less captivated by a lecture on black holes, attending a real university lecture for the first time was a formative experience. “That helped me to get an idea of what it was really like at a university and in a lecture hall.” Pia is now studying political science and social research in Oldenburg and appreciates her early contact with everyday university life. “I already knew how a lecture works, and that learning at university is very different from learning at school.”

Take Part in Science: The Kids’ University 2025
This year, the Kids’ University will once again provide a chance to explore science and university life. From April 1 to 3, children can look forward to gaining answers to questions such as how thoughts become visible, whether computers can be creative, and what languages are spoken at the North Pole. The lectures are geared towards 3rd to 6th graders. In this anniversary year, discovery tours for individual school classes will also be offered for the first time alongside the lectures. From April 8 to 10, small groups of children will conduct research together. The workshops offer practical insights into topics such as robotics, neuroscience, and marine biology. Tickets are free of charge and have been available online since February 5. The University of Bremen’s University & School Transfer Office organizes the Kids’ University.
