Reconciling Studies and Career with Care Responsibilities
On April 26, 2021, the second Study Work Life Week will begin at the University of Bremen.
Being family-friendly is a central issue at the University of Bremen. Bettina Schweizer and Samira Abdel Wahed are the main organizers of the second Study Work Life Week, which will take place online between April 26 and 30, 2021. Diverse aspects of care work will be highlighted in expert talks, workshops, and group discussions.
Once a year, the event week provides a compact offering surrounding the issue of how care work can be reconciled with studies, science, teaching, technical jobs, and administrative jobs: This spans from family care responsibilities to mental load and the discrimination of trans people in their working life. Various target groups will form the focus on five theme days. Frauke Meyer, Director of Finance and Administration at the University of Bremen, is particularly happy about how multifaceted the program is: “The broad span of topics shows how very different family models are today. We want to meet the different needs of the staff and students.”
Family-Friendly University
Bettina Schweizer from the Administrative Unit for Equal Opportunities / Anti-Discrimination and Samira Abdel Wahed, Dual Career Service Coordination Office, initiated the Study Work Life Week. They both actively work on creating family-friendly study and working conditions at the University of Bremen.
The Study Work Life Week is aimed at all university members. “It is important to us that students and staff get to know others in similar situations and can mutually strengthen one another. Additionally, we will provide information on the consultation offices at the university, Bremen Student Services Organization, and in Bremen State. From each Study Work Life Week, we learn about the needs of students and staff by what they say during events. Based on this, we then create further measures that we then plan to realize in upcoming Study Work Life Weeks,” says Bettina Schweizer, who is also the project leader of “audit family-friendly university.”
One Topic Focus per Day
The Study Work Life Week will start on Monday, April 26, 2021 and each day of the week is dedicated to a different area. You can find the whole program and a registration link here.
