Living and Not Just Researching in Solidarity

The Research Network GlobaLab aims to conduct international and interdisciplinary research

Research / Solidarity

The “GlobaLab – Bremen Research Network on Global Solidarity” is one of the University of Bremen clusters, which is applying for the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Initiative. In this short series, we will introduce the project; this concluding part will discuss the international and interdisciplinary approach.

The excellence cluster not only wants to research solidarity, but also set up research in a way that puts it into practice. To achieve this, Bremen researchers form tandem partnerships with colleagues across the globe to discuss the topic in an equal, diversity-sensitive, and inclusive manner. “We want to develop new forms of transnational cooperation to decrease hierarchies and inequality in international research,” says the cluster spokesperson, Prof. Dr. Philipp-Genschel. We have academic partnerships with universities from the entire world – with the African Centre of Excellence in Post-conflict Societies Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, the Amrita University in India, Universidade Federal Fluminense Rio de Janiero in Brazil, Columbia University in the USA, and the University of Queensland in Australia.

“We want to develop new forms of transnational cooperation to decrease hierarchies and inequality in international research.”

The cluster will be comprised of researchers in sociology, geology, history, anthropology, economics, and social psychology. “Our approach is interdisciplinary. We will initially draw from expertise in the social sciences, but are open for additional disciplines, should that prove to be useful,” Genschel says. Team members are from several research groups and institutes that belong to or are associated with the University of Bremen. Among these are the Institute of Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS), the Research Center on Inequality and Social Policy (SOCIUM), the Collaborative Research Center Global Dynamics of Social Policy, and the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS).
